Senior Scientist as Head of Unit

The department of Epidemiological Methods and Etiologic Research at the BIPS - Institute of Epidemiology and Prevention Research in Bremen, Germany, is in search of a senior scientist for the position of Head of the Unit Work and Environment. Research of this Unit addressed causes of cancer of the lung, upper aerodigestive tract and male germ cells. The Unit is actively involved in the pilot phase of the German National Cohort Study. Further research focuses on endocrine disrupting agents, circadian disruption and reproductive health.

Tariff group 13 or 14 TVL (German wage agreement) depending on the personal qualifications. Full time (39.2 hours a week) to start at the earliest convenience. Five-year contract, extension possible.

Your tasks

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct of occupational and environmental studies.

  • Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Collaboration in ongoing national and international research projects.

  • Further development of the research profile of the unit including acquisition of new projects. 

  • Scientific guidance of junior scientists and support of their further professional development, supervision of theses for bachelor diploma, master or doctoral degrees. 

  • Deployment of the Unit’s resources (personnel and materials).

  • Teaching epidemiology at the University of Bremen. 

  • External representation of the unit.

Qualifications

A doctoral degree in areas such as medicine, life sciences or biometry, as well as experience in the conduct of epidemiological studies for at least three years. We expect good communicative skills, German and English skills, dedication and being able to integrate in an interdisciplinary team. A distinctive talent for organization is essential, as well as enjoying working in one’s own responsibility. Following characteristics are of advantage:

  • A formal qualification in epidemiology or public health.

  • Broad experience in scientific work and publishing.
